Piranha ES TDI: new possibilities for high-performance,
cost- sensitive inspection

Combining speed, resolution and sensitivity, the Piranha ES (Enhanced Sensitivity) TDI suite of cameras opens up new possibilities for high-performance, cost-sensitive inspection. The Piranha ES TDI family delivers the lowest price/pixel TDI system solution ever offered by DALSA.

For many years, Dalsa's High Sensitivity (HS) cameras have led the Machine Vision industry for Linescan low-light imaging with their Time Domain Integration (TDI) cameras. The new Enhanced Sensitivity Piranha ES TDI family demonstrates Dalsa's commitment to providing cost-effective solutions for the machine vision industry. The Piranha ES suite of cameras will fill the gap between single line Piranha2 / Piranha3 linescan cameras and the ultra-sensitive Piranha HS TDI products.

How will your application benefit from deploying the Piranha ES TDI?

Dalsa Pirhana ES TDI camera
With pixel throughput rates of up to 640 MHz and one of the fastest line rates in the industry, the Piranha ES TDI allows faster inspection times and higher productivity.

The high sensitivity of the Piranha ES reduces the need for light intensity and so reduces lighting costs. It is now possible to use LED lights for high speed linescan applications and so reduce lighting costs, lighting maintenance and increase up-time and productivity.

The price per pixel cost of the ES series now allows integrators to offer lower cost systems that provide high performance.

What
is TDI, how does it work and why use it?

Dalsa's high-sensitivity (ES and HS) line scan products use TDI (time delay and integration) technology.

TDI is a method of line scanning which provides dramatically increased responsivity compared to other video scanning methods and is based on the concept of accumulating multiple exposures of the same (moving) object, effectively increasing the integration time available to collect incident light. The TDI linescan sensor is made up of multiple lines of pixels. As an object passes under each line it is imaged and added to the image taken under the previous line.

The object motion must be synchronized with the exposures to ensure a crisp image. It permits much greater scanning speeds in low light, or allows reduced lighting levels (and costs) at conventional speeds.

What are the benefits of using TDI technology?

***
More speed: With more effective integration time, you can increase the speed of the target object or inspection web

***

Less light, less expense:Instead of high-powered, high-cost, high-temperature halogen lighting with DC power, you can use high-frequency AC or even LED lighting, profoundly lowering your system maintenance costs

***

Better light control: TDI operation effectively averages out fluctuations in light intensity to represent a DC light source. This factor alone can justify the increased cost of a TDI sensor versus the cost of using DC regulated light source and a line scan image sensor.

Features and benefits
of the Piranha ES TDI

*** Up to >30x more responsivity than traditional line scan cameras
*** Up to 110 kHz line rate (4k80)
*** Throughput rates up to 640 MHz
*** 7 µm x 7 µm or 14 µm x 14 µm pixels
*** Up to 32 TDI stage selections
*** Up to 8k resolution
*** Bidirectional
*** 100x anti blooming
*** Configurable Base or Medium (4k) or Medium or Full (8k) Camera Link interface
*** Selectable area mode of operation for easy camera alignment or for regular operation
*** Flat field correction with four sets of coefficients for each direction
*** Comprehensive selection of programmable features
*** Selectable TDI or Area Mode of operation

The Piranha ES provides you with the flexibility to choose how you want to image. The area mode of operation facilitates camera set-up by allowing you to focus on a 2D area. You can also use area mode as your regular mode of operation. Other programmable features include number of taps, bit depth, flat field correction, direction control, stage selectability, and gain and offset control.

Deploying the ES cameras allow you to reduce the number of cameras in your system and so also reduce the number of frame grabbers, lenses, computers and cables.

Providing an alternative to traditional line scan imaging, the new TDI family makes it easy and cost effective to switch from line scan to TDI.
