Introducing the VLX3 LED line light: one of the industry's highest-intensity LED line lights

Optimising high-speed line scan applications with one of the industry's highest-intensity LED line lights

Lighting plays a fundamental role in the effectiveness of any machine vision system.

Line scan camera technology is rapidly moving towards faster and faster line scan speeds and as this speed increases, the application becomes more challenging, so illumination also needs to increase in intensity to enable high-quality image acquisition. Gardasoft's state-of-the-art liquid-cooled, industrial LED technologies ensure that the highest performance demands can be met for these types of applications.

The VLX lights provide ultra-bright, uniform lighting focused to a narrow beam enabling capture at a rate many times faster than with conventional LED lights; the spin-offs being higher production speeds and/or higher-resolution images. Intensity profile adjustment allows the profile to be varied along the length to compensate for geometry variations in the system, resulting in uniform illumination along the whole camera sensor.

Using the latest high power LED technology available, Gardasoft have used their five years’ experience with liquid cooling technology to produce the industry's highest, continuous intensity LED line light that delivers up to 5M Lux (depending on the optical configuration). The lights' liquid cooling technology enables a very long LED life even when used at their highest intensity.

Wavelengths for the VLX3 include White, IR, Green, Blue, and Red and is available in light lengths from 250mm to 5.0m. Additionally, the VLX3 includes fast warm-up and a choice of local or remote operator interfacing.

Typical applications

If your application requirements need either backlighting or the more-common, top lighting, these lights offer a highly-stable output and are specifically designed for OEM line scan applications. Typical applications include web and surface inspection, pharmaceutical quality control and road/Rail  inspection.

Advantages of LED over fibre optic line lights
Before the advent of LED technology, projects needing high-iintensity ligting deloyed narrow-profile optic fibre lights. The VLX3 LED lights have been designed with such a profile that provides a solid-state soluton providing a better alternative to fibre optic-based systems.

Compared to fibre optic light sources, there are no expensive bulbs to change and so reducing costs and  process down-time. Additionally, the colour of the LEDs remains much more constant than filament or discharge bulbs.

The benefits of sound thermal management
Heat is the cause of failure in LED lighting. The units heat and so reduces the lifetime of the LED component and, consequently, heat management is essential for lighting longevity.

Gardasoft's water-cooling technology allows the VLX3 lights to operate with increased brightness whilst maintaining the lifetime of the LEDs in excess of 50000 hours in all environmental conditions. They have placed emphasis on intensity and thermal management to ensure efficient, reliable and consistent operation and a fast ‘warm-up’ time. The units will automatically switch off in the event of cooling failure to prevent damage to them.
