GigE Vision Standard released at Vision Show East 2006

GigE Camera from Dalsa

The Automated Imaging Association chose The Vision Show East held in Boston USA to formally release the new GigE vision Standard. The GigE Vision standard was developed for the industry with the talent and commitment of a group of companies representing every sector of the vision industry.

The benefits of GigE Vision include:

  • High bandwidth (1000 Mbps) allows large uncompressed images to be transferred quickly in real time
  • Uncompromised data transfer up to 100 meters in length
  • Standard gigabit Ethernet hardware allows single/multiple camera connection to single/multiple computers
  • Low cost cables (CAT5e or CAT6) and standard connectors
  • Highly scalable to follow the growth of Ethernet bandwidth. As 10GigE becomes mainstream, GigE Vision™ will be the fastest connection in the industry
  • Standard hardware, cables allow easy, low cost integration

GigE Vision is described as an open protocol for controlling cameras over Ethernet without requiring frame grabbers or expensive accessories. The standard is designed such that certified GigE Vision products (which will carry the AIA’s GigE Vision logo) from multiple vendors will work together, with standard gigabit Ethernet hardware allowing single and multiple camera connections to single and multiple computers. GigE Vision is scalable and will evolve with Ethernet toward 10-Gbps performance.

GigE Cable

GigE Vision builds on the decades of work the IEEE has put into the physical layer of the evolving Ethernet standard; GigE Vision adds machine-vision-specific enhancements at the application layers. Components of the GigE Vision standard include IP configuration and device detection, camera-control protocol, image-streaming protocol, events signaling, and XML camera description in accordance with the newGenICam (GENeric programming Interface for CAMeras) standard.

Some of the Cameras that already conform with the New GigE Vision standard are the Genie series available from Dalsa Coreco, the Spyder GigE linescan series available from Dalsa. and the JAI-Pulnix range includiong the TM-6740GE, TM-4100GE, TM-1405GE and the TM-1327GE (link to cameras).
