Boson SX8

The Boson SX8 represents a breakthrough in long-wave infrared (LWIR) thermal imaging Boson SX8 . The Boson SX8 is characterised primarily by its delivery of SXGA (1280 × 1024) resolution utilising an 8 µm pixel-pitch microbolometer. It is designed to minimise size, weight, and power consumption, a combination commonly referred to in engineering contexts as SWaP optimisation. The SX8 has been optimised for embedding thermal imaging into industrial, commercial, and defence hardware.

Thermal cameras operate by detecting infrared radiation in the long-wave spectrum. With a high-resolution sensor in a small footprint housing, this device affects several operational parameters compared to standard VGA modules.

Pixel density: The 1280 × 1024 resolution provides four times the pixel count of standard 640 × 512 modules. This increases the total data points available for digital processing and analysis.
Range performance: The increased pixel density alters the Detection, Recognition, and Identification (DRI) ranges. Operators can resolve targets at greater distances due to the higher spatial resolution.
Frame rates: The hardware supports operational speeds of 30 Hz and 60 Hz and outputs at a higher bandwidth .
Regulatory status: The product is manufactured in the United States. It is classified as ITAR-free and complies with National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) standards and so easier to deploy

The camera module is offered in several factory configurations to accommodate specific focal length and field of view (FOV) requirements. The Boson SX8 is designed for insertion into systems, such as uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), counter-UAS platforms, perimeter security systems, handheld thermal devices, medical devices. mining vehicles and any application that requires a small SWaP camera with high performance. To assist integration teams, the manufacturer provides a dedicated graphical user interface (GUI) for configuration and testing.

The hardware architecture is also compatible with the Teledyne FLIR Prism software ecosystem, which provides digital processing features relevant for artificial intelligence and automated object detection. Lens options include germanium-free configurations, which alter the material supply chain requirements for system developers.
