Adept Turnkey present Phantom KT1640 at universities in Melbourne |

Adept Turnkey recently completed a successful roadshow across several of Melbourne’s leading universities, showcasing the high-performance capabilities of the new Phantom KT1640 high-speed camera. Compact yet powerful, the KT-series is ideal for a wide range of academic and industrial imaging applications.
Each workshop was tailored to the interests of the host institution, with a mix of pre-planned and on-the-spot demonstrations: At the University of Melbourne, we set up a Digital Image Correlation (DIC) experiment, capturing precise footage of stress and strain patterns in materials under load, a key area in structural analysis and materials science. At Swinburne University, we captured spray from a bottle in high-speed detail. A simple setup, but one that clearly demonstrated the Phantom’s ability to reveal fluid behaviour not visible in real time, sparking great conversations about future potential use cases. At the Monash Institute of Railway Technology, we recorded high speed imagery of rail images. The quality of the images taken at these high speeds allows for very high resolution imagery making it more suited to detection of small defects. At RMIT Centre for Additive Manufacturing, we imaged a robotic 3D wire arc deposition system in action, capturing the process at the welding tip in slow motion. The lead researcher Prof. Milan Brandt explained that high speed recording of the process provides valuable insight into the physics of 3D wire arc metal printing and helps inform part quality.
All of the demos allowed researchers to look at familiar processes in ultra slow motion. They demonstrated the Phantom KT1640’s strength as a high speed camera, and drove constructive conversation about the seemingly endless possibilities of high speed imaging. A huge thank you to all the universities involved. Your time, input, and enthusiasm made this series a real success, and we’re looking forward to taking our KT series to other universities around Australia. About the KT Camera Series:
All KT-Series models feature an advanced proprietary Backside-Illuminated (BSI) sensor which achieves a QExFF (Quantum Efficiency x Fill Factor) between 84-88% (mono) and an Absolute Sensitivity Threshold (AST) of 24e- as measured using the EMVA1288 standard. The KT-series ensures superior image quality even in low-light environments.
Applications • Automotive and Rail: Enhance vehicle safety and reliability by analysing crash tests, component performance, and dynamic motion with great detail. • Life Sciences and Biomechanics: Capture biological movements and physiological processes to advance medical research and biomechanics studies.
