Phantom v1610 high-speed,
digital camera
An excellent tool for researchers, scientists and engineers
Designed with versatility and flexibility at the forefront,
the Phantom v1610 camera (colour and monochrome versions) is a powerful
new addition to the Phantom® v-Series family of digital high-speed
cameras and is is an excellent tool for researchers, scientists and engineers
needing to capture high-resolution images at ultra-high speeds.
The Phantom v1610 camera boasts a proprietary widescreen CMOS sensor
and can acquire and save up to 16 gigapixels-per-second of data.
At its full megapixel resolution of 1280 x 800, 16 000 frames-per-second
can be grabbed while at reduced resolutions, the v1610 offers frame rates
of 647,000
fps. Further underscoring its versatility, the camera can be ordered
with a unique FAST option (export controlled), which enables
frame rates up to 1 000 000 fps.
The custom-designed sensor has 28 micron pixels, ensuring superb
light-sensitivity which is an essential in ultra-high-speed imaging.
Standard 12-bit depth per pixel yields high dynamic range and provides
excellent image quality.
Described by the manufacturer as "their most connected camera, ever",
the v1610 has common signal connections conveniently located on its back
panel (see image left). Connections include timecode, dual power
inputs, HD-SDI, a GPS input, frame synchronization, and trigger. The two
HD-SDI ports can be configured in several ways. They can act as identical
4:2:2 HD-SDI ports where one port can be set up to provide an (optional)
on-screen display for monitoring the on-camera controls and camera operation.
They can also be configured as a single 4:4:4 Dual-Link HD-SDI port.
The v1610 can be equipped with 24GB, 48GB or 96GB of high-speed memory.
Cine save times can also be maximised with the Phantom
CineMag feature that comes standard on the v1610 which allows the
saving from high-speed RAM to a Cinemag in seconds. Digital high-speed
imaging is memory hungry. The CineMag eliminates camera down time while
saving cines away from volatile memory.
The fully-featured Phantom Camera Control (PCC) software is easy to use
and with it, one or more cameras can be controlled from a sigle interface
with easy access to even the most complex camera features. PCC also includes
a built-in basic motion analysis and measurements package

a 12-second video showing how airflow
turbulence occurs at the surface of an aeroplane engine turbine blade.
The Phantom v1610 was chosen due to its being able to capture a wide
field-of-view because of its high resolution, while providing the
speed and required detail. The video was shot at 1280x800 and 12,000
fps using a 50mm lens and illuminated by a 2W sheet of laser light.
