Super Slow Motion Imaging at Melbourne Cup

CVB machine vision softwareVRC & TVN Use Vision Research’s Phantom V10 for Extreme Slo-Mo Horse Racing

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC), in conjunction with TVN in Melbourne Australia, has recently acquired the Phantom V10 from Vision Research Inc (VRI) to provide super slow motion replay for the finish line at its Flemington horse racing events. The Phantom V10 was used at the recent Melbourne Cup and proved to be extremely useful as this year’s Cup event provided a very close finish between Viewed and second placed Bauer. The slow-motion replays were shown to patrons immediately after the race on the 18 Super screens and over 1500 TVs provided by the VRC at Flemington. TVN, the thoroughbred racing channel who provide the broadcast capability for VRC, also displayed the slow motion replays to TVN viewers in Australia and worldwide and as part of their programming after the event. The VRC also plan to make the replays available on their website for future events.

The Phantom V10 provides high-definition replays shot at up to 500 frames-per second. This can yield replays that slow down motion by up to 20 times, giving the racing viewing audience an experience never seen before. The Vision Research Inc camera was chosen because they have a reputation as the leader in high speed digital cameras and are used by other race courses worldwide. In all 39 races were filmed during the Melbourne Cup Carnival and the results were outstanding. The V10 was supplied and supported by VRI’s distributor in Australia, Adept Electronic Solutions Pty Ltd and will be operated by TVN as part of their outside broadcast service.

” We are delighted to be able to supply this new innovation to on-course and off-course patrons and we look forward to it being part of the standard coverage at Flemington in the future,” said Stephen Silk, General Manager Flemington for the VRC . The VRC continues to innovate and strive to provide the best possible coverage of its races and this latest innovation adds yet another feature to its offering.
