The PC404 was developed to work on trucks and ships. Its experience in these applications make it one of the most durable and rugged PCs available. Applications have grown to include PC solutions for the petrochemical, food processing, mining, manufacturing and telecommunications industries. The system utilises a 6 slot PCI/ISA passive backplane (6 slot ISA optional). A full range of 60ºC rated processors and other boards are available. The passive backplane provides easy maintenance and a simple upgrade path. The unit has substantial defences against vibration and shock, with shock mounts for HDD and FDD, unique multipoint board clamping and the whole unit fitted with anti-vibration mounts.
