INSPECTIONS - labels
Teledyne DALSA
BOA Pro and BOA Spot
Detecting defects on labels using a high-speed BOA Smart camera
|
Identifying the odd product
Products travelling at high speed on a conveyor
belt. Their labels are inspected by the Teledyne Dalsa BOA Smart
cameras in order to detect incorrectly applied labels.
Damaged/illegible label
We purposely defaced a label. The system identified
the fault
We used a 10-item-per-second inspection rate but
the system can be made to inspect at much faster rates
|
The advantage of the BOA is that
the system is self-contained - all processing is
carried out on-board. They are suitable for compact systems and
eliminate the need for a computer. Cameras are
IP-rated.
The BOA Spot is a more cost effective model and
can be fitted with on-board lighting.

Teledyne DALSA Piranha
Capturing
fine detail |
A cloth weave material manufactured in a continuous
length (we call this a web) was inspected by a Teledyne Dalsa Piranha
line scan camera to demonstrate the very-fine-detail capture
of a high-res image using a cost-effective camera. The
weave can then be inspected for defects. This technology is applicable
not only to cloth weave but to any products that is made in a continuous
web e.g. paper, plastic, steel, printing .....
The Piranha linescan colour camera produced an image 8000
pixels wide.
|
Teledyne Dalsa linescan cameras are designed
specifically for hi-res imaging for web-based inspections.
It is very cost-effective especially when high-resolution
is needed to capture tiny defects. |

3D INSPECTIONS
LMI Technologies Gocator
Collecting 3D data |
This demonstration was aimed at showing how 3D data
can be collected and inspected.
A section of car tyre with embossed characters the same colour as
the tyre was scanned. The embossed characters ar quite difficult
to read and a 3D camera allows the camera to detect the height change
due to the embossing. The resultant surface scan produced 3D-relief
data which can then be processed and the characters read easily.
|
The LMI Gocator 3D profile
sensor provides an easy-to-use online 3D inspection system
for applications needing X,Y and Z-measurement.
Software tools are built in to the Gocator smart camera and all
processing is done on board. This very robust sensor is able to
detect down to tens-of-µm-level and is easy to use.

360-DEGREE INSPECTIONS
Halcon, Adept Turnkey |
Cylindrical items (bottles) on a conveyor belt were
captured by 4 cameras positioned at 90 degree intervals around the
bottle. The cameras are triggered simultaneously as the bottle passes
the inspection position on a conveyor belt. The resultant 4 images
were processed, stitched together and flattened by the software
to show one, entire, unrolled label in 2D and so allowing for conventional
image analysis to be performed by quality control machine vision
inspection software. The software looked for a barcode and decoded
it; but other types of label inspections can also be undertaken.
|
This first-of-kind
system in Australia using Halcon software and Adept Turnkey
expertise, is ideal for complete 360-degree examination of labels,
cans, etc without having to stop the conveyor system.
