SNF Lasers illuminate evenly on target - Stockeryale

Nov 2007

SNF lasers from Lasiris is a patented optical laser line generator that is powerful, smart, focused and has differentiated itself as the most uniform laser-line in the market. It is also rugged, shock and vibration resistant and comes with a two year warranty.

The SNF laser's diode is powered up to 200mW, has wavelengths between 635 to 1550 nm and does fan angles of up to 120 degrees (or custom). Allowing users to strobe or control the output electronically the laser is able to output 9 different patterns from a single optical component. The patterns include single line, crosshair, parallel lines, 4x4 grid, dot line, 7x7 dot matrix, single circle, 7 concentric circles and a single dot. In conventional optics producing the crosshair pattern required two separate lasers either splitting or recombining one beam to form a crosshair pattern. This design provides superior quality light patterns while avoiding the intricacies of installation alignment and detector calibration.

The SNF laser's focusing ability through a choice of lenses means that a user can customize the laser to the precise requirements of the application. The 501L for example does the smallest line while the 701L manages a thicker line but maintains it at a longer distance.

StockerYale has set its SNF lasers above the competition through the benefits brought about by its patented beam sharing optics.
Conventional cylindrical optics produce a Gaussian line profile with a bright centre and fading ends resulting in irregularities in light uniformity. SNF lasers however produce an evenly illuminated line that remains crisp and sharp on both ends.

Some of the applications used by SNF lasers include machine vision, industrial inspection, 3D contour mapping, positioning and visualization, biomedical and high-end alignment.

StockerYale SNF lasers are truly a powerful, smart and rugged product leader with the most uniform laser-line in the market.

2 MP CCD camera with mini Cameralink - JAI CB200/CM200

Nov 2007

Jai's new CB-200MCL and CM-200MCL are digital progressive scan 2 megapixel CCD cameras with a new digital Mini Camera Link (MCL) interface. Based on the design of Jai's previous CV-A1 and CV-A2 cameras this new CCD camera features optional Power over Camera Link (PoCL), auto-iris and control tool. Both cameras are offered in either monochrome (CM-200MCL) or colour (CB-200MCL).

The JAI CB-200MCL/CM-200MCL features a high sensitivity 1/1.8" CCD sensor and operates at up to 25 frames a second at full UXGA resolution (1620 x 1236 active pixels) in continuous operation mode. The CCD camera operates at 24 frames a second at external trigger and full resolution modes and up to 89 frames a second at partial scan mode. This differentiates the camera as one of the fastest high performance cameras in its class.

The JAI CB-200MCL/CM-200MCL CCD camera comes with a new mini-CL (mini CameraLink) interface. The new CCD camera allows a host of new advantages such as reduced size and a new Power over CameraLink (PoCL) feature. Its compact 29 x 44 x 66 mm body matches the size of the older analog models allowing machine vision users to easily convert from analog to the newer digital range without timely and costly mechanical/optical redesign. JAI's new optional PoCL feature comes as a single one-connector solution saving the user from messy cable clutter.

JAI's CB-200MCL and CM-200MCL CCD cameras also come with a smart automatic iris function making it suited for most outdoor applications. In an outdoor application such as traffic infringement or surveillance where varying levels of sunlight can be a barrier the camera can automatically adjust to a wide range of light levels.

The JAI CB-200MCL/CM-200MCL CCD camera comes with easy-to-use control software for camera configuration and setup. This connectivity from the software to the camera runs over the CameraLink connection and therefore requires no extra cables. The software communicates with the camera using ascii commands so an industry standard communication package such as HyperTerminal can also be used or a user may choose to write his own communications easily and simply.

Typical application areas for the CB200MCL / CM200MCL include:

  • Automotive inspection (e.g. High accuracy gauging & process verification)
  • Pharmaceutical inspection (e.g. blister pack content, fluid fill levels)
  • Beverage industry (e.g. inspection of defective bottles and fill levels)
  • Food sorting
  • Electronics inspection

JAI's CB-200MCL/CM-200MCL CCD cameras come with good frame speeds, resolution levels and a new mini-CL function packed with quality features.

Telecentric Optics for Machine Vision - Opto Engineering

Nov 2007

Opto Engineering Telecentric Lenses

Telecentric lenses are useful in machine vision and precision-gauging applications with the benefits of low optical distortion, high degree of telecentricity and accurate image reproduction. Opto Engineering telecentric lenses offering high quality telecentricity, high resolution levels and minimal distortion. Opto Engineering offers bi-telecentric lenses for matrix and linear detectors.

Telecentricity Defined
Machine Vision applications often require a high level of accuracy and telecentric lenses differ from conventional lenses through their unique ability to view an object as the same size despite its distance from the lens. This is called telecentricity. The key capability of a telecentric lens is to accept only parallel light rays and to block those rays which are not parallel to the optical axis. Another way to put this is to describe it as removing parallax.

Near-zero Distortion
Common machine vision lenses exhibit more than 1-2% of distortion that severely limit dimensional measurement applications but Opto Engineering telecentric lenses are certified with near-zero distortion at under 0.1%. This applies to resolving both radial and trapezoidal distortion. Telecentric lenses accomplish this accuracy by accepting ray cones where the "principal ray" is parallel to its mechanical axis because the entrance pupil is placed at infinity.

Opto Engineering telecentric lenses accomplish all this but add 3 differentiating advantages to its competitors:

1. The principal ray is chosen as being the ray striking the camera detector in the centre of radiometric distribution.
2. The principal ray is also the axis of the acceptance cone, assuring a symmetric grey level distribution at the edges.
3. The telecentric lenses are bi-telecentric meaning that they are also telecentric in the image space i.e. on the sensor side.

This is important for machine vision applications because significant errors can occur in applications such as measuring bottles on a conveyor that "walk" side-to-side changing their distances from the camera or an automated circuit-board assembly that requires measurements of a few thousandth of an inch. 3D objects when viewed by a conventional lens also suffer perspective errors and image position errors. Therefore telecentric lenses can prove extremely useful in the inspection of 3D objects or scenes where image size and shape accuracy are crucial.

Opto Engineering telecentric lenses offer quality imaging with their low optical distortion, high degree of telecentricity and accurate image reproduction for almost any kind of machine vision application.
